Born in Oxford, undergraduate at University College — first-class BA in physics. Lucasian Professor at Cambridge from 1979.

Stephen William Hawking was born in Oxford on 8 January 1942 and read physics at University College, graduating with a first-class BA. The bulk of his career was at Cambridge, where from 1979 to 2009 he held the Lucasian Professorship of Mathematics — Newton's old chair.
