Spiced Roots
Proper Caribbean food on the Cowley Road — jerk chicken with soul, plantain with crunch, and rice and peas done right.
Spiced Roots fills a gap on the Cowley Road that shouldn't have existed for as long as it did. The menu is Caribbean comfort food (jerk chicken, curry goat, ackee and saltfish, rice and peas, plantain) cooked with the kind of depth and patience that you can't fake. The jerk marinade has proper Scotch bonnet heat and allspice complexity. The curry goat is slow-cooked until it falls apart. This is food cooked with deep knowledge and genuine craft.
The setup is casual: order at the counter, grab a seat, and wait for food that arrives hot and generous. The Cowley Road has always been Oxford's most multicultural street, and Spiced Roots is a welcome addition to its culinary lineup.
What to order
The jerk chicken is the signature and deservedly so. The curry goat is the sleeper hit: rich, tender, and deeply spiced. The plantain is perfectly fried. Rice and peas are the proper coconut-milk version. The rum punch, when available, is strong and sweet.
Good to know
Small space, limited seating, so takeaway is a solid option. Portions are generous and prices are very reasonable. Closed Sunday and Monday. The Cowley Road location puts it in good company — you can browse the international supermarkets nearby for Caribbean ingredients inspired by your meal.
